Garden Update - July 2022

The rain seems to be a daily occurrence, which I guess is fitting in our inland rainforest. I forgot that was where we lived, when it barely snowed or even rained in 2021, so the rain is very welcome this summer. It has set the tone for the garden, with a cool spring. Many plants are small or struggled as seedlings in the greenhouse, so the garden looks very different this year from previous years. I am still enjoying it though since it still feeds us and we always crave lovely garden greens after the winter drought.

For breakfast this morning, we had hard boiled eggs and a salad, or at least that is what I had since toddlers and little kids only eat lettuce when they are grazing through the garden. I have so many kinds of greens this year, I enjoy picking a robust variety to feed our microbiome for our daily salads. I have also been blanching greens as they start to bolt from the heat we aren’t really having lol.

I am happy with the perennials of the garden and how they seem to be thriving in this weather. The jeuresalem artichokes, berry bushes, horseradish, and more, are lush and green. The millions of nasturtiums just started blossoming, and the borage is poking out it’s purple flowers for the bees.

I did a “brief” garden tour along with the greenhouse on video. I wasn’t able to capture it all, but you can see some lovely surprises and some honest failures on tape. Such is the world of gardening and why I plant so much.

Enjoy!
